What You Can Expect in Miss Smith's Class

This page will give you an overview of the Unit Pathways that we will be working through during this school year. You will also find some useful resources that will help you complete many of your assignments in the drop down menu under this tab. You WILL need to use one or more of those resources at some point in the school year.

Unit 1. Geography and Economic Growth in Georgia

In this unit, you will learn about the five geographic regions of Georgia and how they compare and contrast to one another. You will also learn how transportation routes across the state contribute to the economic growth of the state. You will create your own map of Georgia that accurately depicts the locations of the five regions, important physical features, major cities, and major interstate systems. You will prepare a written description of the state's climate and how weather differs from region to region. Lastly, you will complete a unit reflection piece that will allow you to put your newly acquired knowledge to the test.

Unit 2. Early Exploration of Georgia

In this unit, you will learn about the prehistoric people of Georgia and the beginning of European exploration in the state. As we discuss the prehistoric groups of Georgia, you will learn about the four time periods and how life in Georgia evolved from the Paleo-Indian period to the Mississippian Period. We will focus a bit heavier on the Mississippian time period than the others. We will then discuss the beginning of European exploration in the region and why it happened.

Unit 3. Colonial Georgia

As you might have guessed by the title, Unit 3 is all about the colonial period in Georgia. By the end of the unit, you will be able to explain the importance of the Charter of 1732, the reasons for settlement in Georgia, and the transition of Georgia into a royal colony. Along the way, you will learn about important people from this period including James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and the five diverse groups of the Trustee Period. Lastly, this unit will help you become an expert in the good and services that were available in Georgia during the colonial period.
